Orange fireworks and Mexican waves - Schippers takes Gold

At the end of an exciting day 3 at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, what could be better than a European 100m champion in an orange shirt? Instead of getting sleepy, the spectators in the stadium just woke up! Mexican waves and loud cheers in lots of different languages welcomed the athletes to the arena.

The whole stadium went quiet when the judge announced: ,,On your marks” but when Dafne Schippers crossed the finish line of the 100m women’s final after a very good 10.90, the stadium exploded into a firework. Dafne Schippers defended her 100m title and Amsterdam is celebrating.

The silver medal went to Ivet Lalova-Collio (BUL) with 11.20 and the bronze medal will be taken home by Mujinga Kambundji (SUI) who finished in 11.25.

The celebrations for yet another gold medal for the home country were shortly overshadowed by the injury which one of the British sprinters, Desiree Henry, sustained during the race. Schippers proved amazing sportsmanship and went to see to her before she started her well-deserved round of honour.

800m women: Pryshchepa (UKR) wins European title in thrilling final

Ukrainian Nataliya Pryshchepa took the gold medal in the 800m in 1:59.70. The eight women in the final stayed close together, and came out of the last bend almost in sync. Pryshchepa had the best final push in the end. Renelle Lamote (FRA) took the silver in 2:00.19, and Lovisa Lindh (SWE) brought home the bronze medal in a personal best of 2:00.37.

Former European Champion and reigning World Champion Arzamasova (BLR) did not compete in Amsterdam. 2014 bronze medallist Joanna Jozwik (POL) wás present in the the final, but could not battle for the prizes. Lamote came to Amsterdam as the European leading lady, but was not able turn this fact into a European gold medal. It was nevertheless a thrilling final, with an ecstatic crowd cheering the women to the finish line. In the final 50 meters, Pryshchepa placed an acceleration which no one could follow. This way, she ensured herself of gold.

Polish Chichocka wins the 1500m after a very slow start

Hassan, the European Champion of 2014, had to settle for silver in the finals of the women’s 1500m. The Polish Cichocka surprisingly took the gold. For Cichocka it is her first major title on an outdoor track, after the silver medal on the ECH and the WCH indoor. The bronze was for the Irish Mageean.

The finals for the 1500m started extremely slow. Only after 800m the competition really started. At that moment Hassan moved up from the last to the fourth place, which moved the field quite a bit. In the last 400m she started sprinting to, as she hoped, her prolonged title. Her mission failed because the 28-year old Polish Angelika Chichocka happened to be even more explosive. Her biggest successes this far, Chichocka had in indoor championships. In both the previous ECH as WCH Indoor she got a silver medal on the 1500m. Chichocka finished in 4:33.00. Hassan ran a time of 4:33.76. This way she stayed in front of the Irish Mageean with two hundreds of a second.

5000 m womens’ finalist Can runs away with second gold medal

The firm favourites for the 5000m contest were Yasemin Can (TUR), who won the 10.000m earlier this tournament, European Champion from 2014 Meral Bahta (SWE) and Karoline Jerkeli Grovdal (NOR), the European Bronze Medaillist from 2014. Grovdal, however, pulled out before the start.

After the first lap Kock (GER) drops out leaving the athletes to stay in a block for a couple of rounds, until Can decided to pull the trigger. She shot forward, first leaving Bahta (SWE) and Twell (GB) in tow, and the rest of the chasers with Kuijken in 8th position. With Can clearly in the lead the last lap created excited fan participation, which boosted Bahta to gain second place, Twell third and home favourite Kuijken 4th.

Turkey take first gold medal of the championships as Yasemin Can wins the 10,000m

Yasemin Can from Turkey is the first gold medalist of the European Athletics Championships 2016. She won the 10,000m in a new European U23 record of 31:12.86. The silver medal goes to Dulce Felix from Portugal with a personal best of 31:19.03. Bronze goes to Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal from Norway with yet another personal best of 31:23.45.

The first final of the championships was won by the Kenian-born athlete Yasemin Can who has been cleared by the IAAF to represent Turkey from March 13, 2016. She dominated the race from the start and stated afterwards: ,,I tried to see whether somebody was following me or not, but nobody was, so I kept running on." The result was a new European U23 record. With regards to the upcoming Olympics where she will start in the 10,000 and 5000 meters, she said: ,,This was a good race but the Olympics are going to be very hard and so I am not going to run alone there. I will follow someone, I cannot run alone."

The silver medal goes to the Portuguese racer Dulce Felix, 33, who lived up to her name by being very happy about her result.  She finished in 31:19.03 which is a personal best for her.  On the bronze position is Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal from Norway who also ran a personal best of 31:23.45. Dulce Felix was thinking of her dad when she crossed the finish line: "This is a very emotional moment for me.I wanted this medal so very much for my dad who is not with us any more. He was the first person to hug me after my European gold medal in 2012, and that was the thought that came into my head after I crossed the finish line."

Jip Vastenburg from the Netherlands, who is the European U23 Champion 2015, came in on a good 8th place.

This race had a age span of over 20 years difference between the youngest racer Yasemin Can and the very experienced racers such as Jo Pavey (GBR, 42) and Christelle Daunay (FRA, 41) who finished in the 5th and 13th place respectively.

Golden day for Moreira (POR) and Tadesse (SUI)

Portugal's Sara Moreira and Abraham Tadesse, of Switzerland, won the first European Athletics Half Marathon titles in Amsterdam today - and celebrated double gold as they led their nations to the team crowns too.

On a morning that combined everything which is wonderful about athletics - glorious weather, a fantastic setting, an iconic finish, brilliant crowds and particularly a series of outstanding performances - Moreira and Tadesse ran away from their rivals for two impressive victories.

And at the end, as she passed under the Rijksmuseum with the winning line yards away, grabbing a Portuguese flag, Moreira just could not control her emotions. She triumphed in 1:10:19 and burst into tears.

"I was crying for my baby back home," Moreira told European Athletics afterwards. "He would be watching and all my emotion came out. It is one of the best days of my career."

Her son Guilherme is three later this year and what a present mum has to take home to him, two gold medals after she was brilliantly supported by teammates Jessica Augusto and Dulce Felix, the 10,000m silver medallist.

Moreira won by 16 seconds from Italy's Veronica Inglese with Augusto in third in 1:10:55 and Felix in 12th in 1:12:39, bringing Portugal a gold medal time of 3:33:53 from Italy (3:36:38) and Turkey (3:39:59), whose leading runner was Esma Aydemir in fifth (1:11:49).

Moreira, the 2013 European Indoor 3000m champion and triple team gold medallist at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, was always among the favourites for an event which was a glorious way to start the last day of these 23rd European Athletics Championships.

Athletics is evolving
Athletics is always evolving and the introduction of the Half marathon, with both races followed by a mass race, proved a real hit. Inglese made the early runner on a course that started at the Rijksmuseum and made its way through the city, with the runners crossing a series of canals and through some of Amsterdam's major tourist spots. With the constant shots from the helicopter above, and the sun's glare rebounding off the water, the event painted its own picture.

But down on the ground Moreira, 30, was not rushing as Inglese was joined in front early on by Turkey's Sultan Haydar. The two leaders went through 5km in 16:26with Moreira just five seconds behind but by 10km, the Portuguese was sharing top spot with Haydar in 33:06, with Inglese trailing them by a second. Haydar had slipped down the field by 15km, with Moreira just in front of Inglese before she stepped on the gas, quickly establishing an eight-second lead which was never going to be made up as the winning margin grew.

"It's a beautiful day," said Moreira. "I also ran in the 10,000m (she did not finish) but that didn't go well, so this result makes me delighted. We have a good team here." Inglese said: "I was sixth in the 10,000m and got my personal best in both events, so I am happy."

Switzerland
Tadesse was never out of the leading group in the men's race, where he eventually asserted his authority to win in 1:02:03 from Turkey's Kaan Kigen Ozbilen (1:02:27) and Italian Daniele Meucci.

With Tadesse's compatriots Julien Lyon in 15th (1:04.40) and Adrian Lehmann in 26th (1:05.21), Switzerland narrowly took team gold in 3:12:04, from Spain in 3:12:06, with their best finisher being Carles Castillejo (eighth in 1:03:52), and Italy in 3:12:41.

Tadesse, Azerbaijan's Evans Kiplagat and Ozbilen made the early break, before they were joined by Meucci and the medals were always going to be decided between this quartet.

Meucci had the edge with a six second lead as he went through 10km in 14:50 but by 15km it was a two-way battle between Ozbilen and Tadesse.

Then Tadesse took control, making a decisive break and he never looked back.

He said: "I know the Turkish athlete well and know he is fast over 10,000m. My tactics were to follow him at the start and stay with him.

"In the last eight kilometres I would see if I had the energy to go away. I noticed that he was looking back at lot, so I decided to run away."

Ozbilen said: "The course was not as easy as I thought. Amsterdam is a flat city but there were ups and downs. I am happy to be here. It was a good experience competing with the team."

Krause confirms great form on 3000m Steeplechase

Gesa Felicitas Krause (GER) fulfills the expectations and wins the gold medal in the 3000m Steeplechase Women’s Final. The defending champion Antje Moeldner-Schmidt (GER) is currently in a baby break but her team mate Gesa Felicitas Krause, 23, who has so far been the fastest woman this season deputized well for her and kept the gold in Germany. Luiza Gega from Albania won the silver medal.

The 27 year old Gega was the best qualifier and in the lead, together with Krause, throughout the whole of the race; however she fell behind in the last round when Krause increased the pace significantly. Three rounds before the end the duo had already created quite a gap between themselves and the rest of the field and it was 26 year old Oezlem Kaya (TUR) who secured herself the bronze medal.

Petersen (DEN) wins first major title in 400m hurdles

With European gold in the 400m hurdles, Sara Slott Petersen (DEN) wins her first major senior title. In an again packed Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, she was crowned the first European Champion of this evening-session. In the battle for the podium, the finalists continuously switched sides. In the end, the podium is totally colored in red and white, with Joanna Linkiewicz (POL) taking the silver medal, and Léa Sprunger (SUI) claiming the bronze.

Reigning European Champion Eilidh Doyle (GBR) decided to only compete in the 4x400 relay these European Championships. That paved the way for a new European Champion. The favourites Sprunger, Petersen and Linkiewicz lived up to the expectations. Coming to Amsterdam, they were the fastest women in the field. The Norwegian Iuel started off quick, but couldn't follow through on the last 100m. Sprunger, who has the second fastest time this year behind resigning champion Doyle, came onto the home straight in fifth position, but overtook Iuel and the Italian Folorunso in the last 40m to take the bronze.

Titimets (UKR), the 2014 silver medallist, surprisingly didn't make it to the final.

Ruth Beitia (ESP) wins her third Women's High Jump gold

Ruth Beitia, the 37 year old Spanish athlete and defending European Champion won the High Jump competition with a seasonal best of 1.98m.

Miss High Jump strikes again
Ruth Beitia, the Spanish ,,Miss High Jump", won the title the third time in a row after 2012 and 2014. Despite her 37 years, she was still a serious competitor for the title and the gold medal and she proved everyone right. After crossing the bar at 1,98m on the first attempt, she tried the 2.00m but failed at all three attempts.

The silver medals went to Mirela Demireva (BUL) and Airine Palsyte both with a hight of 1.96m.

Stefanidi from Greece wins pole vault

The weather conditions, a high wind, were troubling the 14 athletes in the final of the pole vault competition. But it didn’t stop the athletes from making it a spectacular battle. In the end Greek Stefanidi jumped the best, with 4.81m.

The opening height was 4.35m. At that height Dutch athlete Femke Pluim and Tina Sutej from Solvenia unfortunately failed all three attempts. At 4.55m only 5 athletes were still in competition. Ekaterina Stefanidi, in her first jump went over 4.55m and later she only needed one attempt at 4.65m and 4.70m. The other athletes at 4.55m were Michaela Meijer and Angelica Bengtsson both from Sweden, Lisa Ryzih from Germany and Nikoleta Kiriakopoulou also from Greece. Kiriakopoulou and Meijer failed with 3 attempts at 4.65m which left only three athletes for the medals. Rizih skipped the 4.65m and went straight to 4.70m were she at her second attempt jumped over her season best height. She however withdrew from an attempt on 4.75m. By doing that she won silver and left gold to Stefanidi. Bengtsson won bronze with her season best jump of 4.65m. Being in the flow of winning gold Stefanidi jumped over 4.81m which is a championship record. In her last attempt she tried to break the Greece record of 4.94m, but failed unfortunately. Dutch Athlete Femke Pluim became sixth with also a season best of 4.45m.

Španovic is unstoppable in long jump

The reigning European indoor Champion, 26-year old Ivana Španovic won her first outdoor gold medal tonight. The Serbian athlete jumped to 6.94m, only 0.01m short of her seasonal best.

Although the wind was blowing pretty seriously in the stadium, the long jump athletes managed to deliver their jumps. Španovic more than managed: She jumped over 6.70m four times (and two times invalid). Jazmin Sawyers from Great Britain was very happy with her silver medal and her distance of 6.86m. She only just qualified for this final: If she had jumped 0.06m less far last Wednesday, she should have stayed in her hotel tonight.

Both Ksenija Balta of Estonia and Malaika Mihambo (GER) had a best jump of 6.65m. Mihambo took the bronze, because her second best jump was 0.02m better than Balta's.

Mamona (POR) triple jumps to gold

During the final of the women’s triple jump, Patricia Mamona won a gold medal with a new national record of 14.58m. Papahristou (GRE) took the lead in the third round with 14.45m. She was able to improve to 14.47m, but which turned out to be enough for bronze. Hanna Minenko (ISR) jumped to a silver medal with her jump of 14.51m, which was her only valid attempt.

Beforehand, Papahristou (GRE) was considered a contender for gold, based on her position as European leading. Circumstances where though this evening, with heavy wind blowing. But the athletes jumped far and the crowd witnessed an exciting final.

Saladukha, the 2014 European Champion, wasn't impressive in the qualification and neither was she in the final. She placed as tenth athlete, without meeting the direct qualification distance, and ended up at the fifth place. Issouf (FRA) and Panturoiu (ROU) were not present in the final, while they have jumped the fourth and fifth European leading distances this season.

Christina Schwanitz (GER) defends title in Shot Put

Christina Schwanitz (30) from Germany won the title in the Women's Shot Put with a new European Lead of 20.17m. She remains the dominant athlete in her field in Europe.

Defending title despite recent injury
Her aim was to defend her title despite a fairly recent shoulder injury and subsequently very little training, and she delivered. Christina Schwanitz (GER), reigning European and World Champion dominated the field of 12 finalists in the Women's Shot Put final this afternoon. Her very first shot went to an amazing 20.17m and she dominated the field from the beginning.

The other potential 19-meter contestant in the field, Anita Marton (HUN), European Championships Bronze Medallist 2014, finished in second place with 18.72m, almost 1.5 meters behind Schwanitz. The bronze medal went to Emel Dereli (TUR) with 18.22m. Yulia Leantsiuk (BLR) finished on the dreaded 4th place only 2 centimeters behind the bronze medal position.

Melissa Boekelman (NED) finished on the 8th position with a shot to 17.92m.

Road to Rio
Even though she only started back in training 8 weeks ago, Christina Schwanitz seems mentally and physically ready for competition, having just won the National German Championships again. She  stated before the European Athletics Championships that she would ,,be extremely disappointed if she could not achieve her personal aim of defending the title due to things like rain or a returning injury”. She is realistic, however, that there is still a way to go to be fit enough for Rio and therefore these European Championships were being considered a very important milestone which she took very seriously.

Perkovic’s discus flies again

Sandra Perkovic, reigning Olympic and European champion, won tonight’s discus final with 69.97m. The 26 year old Croatian left Germany’s Fischer and Craft behind her.

After starting with just 62.60m, Perkovic took the lead in her third attempt. Her position was not threatened after that, which makes Perkovic the third woman in history to win four European titles in a row.

Julia Fischer came in second with a throw of 65.77m and Shanice Craft claimed the bronze medal with her throw of 63.89m. Nadine Müller, who became third in last year's World Championships, became fourth.

Anita Wlodarczyk is invincible

Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland won a Hammer Throw final at the Olympic Stadium tonight. She threw her hammer to an amazing 78.14m in her 6th and final attempt, supported by the crowds in the sold-out Olympic Stadium. The 30 year old has achieved almost everything in her career bar the Olympic title which she is hoping to win in Rio this August.

Anita Wlodarczyk (POL), world record holder, World Champion and defending European Champion is a class of her own. She achieved over-78 meter throws in 6 competitions already this year and keeps displaying a consistent form. Today it took her 5 attempts to get over the 78 meter mark but she did not disappoint.  The likable 30 year old severed a ligament in her ankle when jumping up to celebrate her world title in Berlin 2009 and missed the rest of that season. She clearly learnt a lesson there and contained herself today, especially with a view to the upcoming Olympics.

Anita Wlodarczyk says that at big contests she throws wearing a glove which once belonged to Kamila Skolimowska, Poland’s Olympic Champion from 2000 who passed away in 2009 at the age of 26.

At 32, Betty Heidler (GER) is in her final season after a long, successful career. She has experienced everything at European Athletics Championships, but today, for the first time, she won a silver medal with a throw of 75.77m. Hanna Skydan, the 24 year old World University Games Champion 2015 from Azerbaijan won bronze.

Khaladovich takes javelin crown, Spotakova disappointing

Tasiana Khaladovich is the surprising new European Champion javelin with a throw of 66.34m. The Belarus won in a thrilling contest from German Linda Stahl and Croatian Sara Kolak. Double Olympic champion Spotakova (CZE) had a bad day at the office and ended fifth.

The competition heated up in round three, with the lead changing from one throw to another. Eventually Olympic champion and world record-holder Spotakova (CZE) appeared no match today for Khaladovic (BLR), Stahl (GER) and Kolak (CRO). Palameika (LAT) was not in form and threw too many no results and Hussong (GER), who was expected to contend, didn’t qualify.
Khaldovich was over the moon with her win: "I am shocked, I didn't expect that."
A disappointed but determined Spotakova told the reporters: "It was not my day. I take this and will probably react in Rio."

Home gold and national record for outstanding Vetter (heptathlon)

After two days and seven events, Anouk Vetter (NED) claimed the gold medal in the women's heptathlon. The crowd in an exploded Olympic Stadium pushed the 23-year-old athlete to her limits in the final 800m. She took the European title in a Dutch national record of 6626 points. Winner of the silver medal, Nana Djimou (FRA), congratulated the new European Champion lying on the track with two kisses just after the finish line.

Vetter led the competition after six events by 67 points. In order to claim the gold, she had to stay ahead of now former European Champion Antoinette Nana Djimou, the better 800m-runner of the two. All Vetter had to do, was to follow the French heptathlete. She ran the final 800m in 2:21.50, enough for gold and a national record. Vetter takes over this national record, which was 6545 points, from Dafne Schippers, 2016 European Champion in the 100m. 2014 gold medallist Nana Djimou has to make do with silver. The bronze went to Ivona Dadic (AUT). "I cannot comprehend what just happened. I want to thank everybody, this means a lot to me," stammered an overjoyed Vetter after her race.

New crowned champion Vetter can now start her preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she will encounter the European and World leading ladies Jessica Ennis-Hill (GBR) and Brianne Theisen-Eaton (CAN).

Gold for the sprinting relay Ladies in Orange

The Dutch 4x100m team won gold in a new national record of 42.04s and took everyone by surprise. There was a sea of orange in the sold-out stadium during this first relay race of the day as the Dutch athletes started from lane 7. It was a positive surprise that European Champion Dafne Schippers was confirmed to run, since she pulled out of the qualifications the day before.

Close behind the Dutch, in lane 5, were the defending champions from Great Britain & NI. This team won the qualifying rounds with a seasonal best of 42.59s. As defending champions with the best individual sprinters, they were the favourites for this final. But the Dutch dominated the race from the start and with very good passing-overs of the baton they did not waste any time there. With the support of thousands of Dutch supporters the team flew to the finish line in a new national record of 42.04s. Team GB & NI were unable to get close and finished second in 42.45, another seasonal best for the team. Germany, the fastest team this year so far in Europe won the bronze medal in this nail-biting final.

British triumph over French in women's 4x400m relay

Great Britain won gold with a world season's best. The French team took the silver and the Italian women gained the bronze medal.

Great Britain led the race from the start and won the gold comfortably with a time of 3:25,05. No 4x400 squad was faster this year. The British women snatched the European title from defending champions France. The latter took the silver with 3:25,96. The battle for bronze was heavily contested. The Italian women took third, just before Poland, Germany and Ukraine, the latter being the silver medallist of 2014. The young Dutch team finished in seventh place; their time will come.
