| Like the men’s 50 kilometre walk of 1976, the IAAF arranged world championships for the women’s 3000 and 400m hurdles – events not yet on the Olympic timetable. Sadly, the championships were devalued by the late withdrawal of the USSR team. The season’s nine fastest 3000m runners did not compete. The 1980 world number 10, Friedmann, who had not previously broken nine minutes, made a timely improvement to win the title comfortably. She took the lead after 1300m. The other medals went to Scandinavians, with 24 year-old Ingrid Christensen (later Kristiansen) taking her first major honour. “If all the aces had started I certainly would not have won”, said the modest winner. |
