In the absence of the USSR, the GDR took all three medals. The title went to 1979 World Cup winner Broschat (née Klepp), who prevailed by 0.01. Her time of 54.55 was quicker than the official world record of 54.78, but at the time an even quicker mark by another East German (54.28 Karin Rossley) was awaiting ratification. The 'B’ final was won by Spain’s Rosa Colorado, but she was later disqualified for failing a drugs test. This was the first such violation at the IAAF World Championships.
