A tactically perfect race by Cram continued Britain’s great run of success in championship 1500m races of the 80s. One of the best quality fields of the championships set off at a pace slower than the women’s final (400m: 64.98, 800m: 2:07.73). The Cram camp had been warned that Aouita – world leader at 3:32.54 – would make a move 500m from home. This proved to be perfectly true. The Moroccan bolted ahead and Cram responded to follow Aouita into the last lap. The favourite, Scott, was also in close contention but world record holder Ovett was boxed. Cram went past Aouita with 200m remaining and led from the Moroccan into the finishing straight with Scott third. Running wide, the American moved into second and, for an instant, looked as if he would overtake Cram. Aouita also continued to run strongly. But they could gain little on the long-striding Briton who was able to cross the line with fists clenched in triumph. Ovett, who ran the last 300m quicker than anyone else, just fell short of catching Aouita for the bronze. “I think the reason for the slow race was the fact that most of the front runners had been knocked out in the semi-finals,” concluded the winner, whose preparation for the championships had been limited by injury. “This race went perfectly for me.”
 These are the official results of the men's 1500 metres event at the 1983 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. There were a total number of 52 participating athletes, with four qualifying heats, two semi-finals and the final held on Sunday 14 August 1983.
