McColgan, who as Liz Lynch had placed fifth in Rome, overcame the extreme heat and humidity to win from the front by a huge margin. The start of the final was delayed by several minutes following the commotion surrounding Mike Powell’s long jump world record. Once the race started, McColgan’s intentions were clear. With kilometre splits of 3:02.95, 6:09.42, 9:16.96 and 12:25.85, she gradually dropped most of the opposition, including the defending champion Kristiansen. At halfway (15:34.15), the Scotswoman had only the world junior champion, Tulu, for company. The chasing pack were 20m behind. The Ethiopian tried to slow the pace down at the start of the eighth kilometre, but McColgan pushed on relentlessly and was 80m in front by 8000m. Tulu fell out of contention. While McColgan crossed the line, the Chinese pair of Zhong and Wang were unexpectedly outsprinting Ullrich for the other medals. “I was waiting for someone to pass me, but nobody did,” said McColgan, who had given birth to a daughter just 10 months earlier. “Tulu tried, but she was actually trying to slow down the pace. I knew she was tired and I knew if I wanted the gold, I would have to go for it. And I went, saying 'I want, I want, I want …’ In spite of the conditions, a terrific standard was set in the heats with 14 women quicker than 32 minutes.
 The women's 10,000 metres event featured at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. There were a total of 49 participating athletes, with two qualifying heats and the final being held on 30 August 1991.
