| The unfortuate Mutola was disqualified after winning her semi for stepping on the line inside her lane at the start of the race. Thus ended her 42-race winning streak which stretched back to 1992 and meant she could not defend her title. In Mutola’s absence, few would have wished to devalue Ana Quirot’s victory in the final which provided the most emotional moment of the week. The Cuban, fourth in 1987 and second in 1991, was making a courageous comeback after a terrible domestic accident in January 1993 which left her with burns over much of her upper body. Just as she did in Stuttgart, Rainey took up the pace in the final. She went through 400m in 56.42 and was still in front at 600m (1:25.91). Holmes then edged in front in the finishing straight before being passed in turn by Quirot then Vriesde. The 32 year-old Cuban won easily with a 1995 world best. “In my heart I never thought I could come back so strongly,” said Quirot. “This is the most beautiful victory of my life.” Djaté, who just failed to overtake Holmes for the bronze, overcame the loss of a shoe in the semi-final to qualify for the final. |
