1997 World Championships in Athletics Athens, Greece

1997 6th IAAF World Championships - Athens - Women's Heptathlon

Host City: Athens, Greece
Dates: August 1–10, 1997
Nations participating: 198
Athletes participating: 1882
    Main venue: Olympic Stadium
Overview by IAAF   oaka7
With the incomparable JJK confining herself to the long jump and Shouaa unable to defend because of a severe back injury, the 1991 champion Braun – contesting her 50th heptathlon – seized the opportunity of one last major title at the age of 32. The woman destined to succeed her as European champion, Lewis, was held at bay throughout. Braun opened with a snappy 13.16 to win the hurdles and followed up with a season’s best high jump, a personal best shot put and a moderate 200m to lead overnight with 4009 to 3938 by Sazanovich, 3919 by Nazarovien and 3888 by Lewis. Lewis moved into second place after the long jump and made further inroads in the javelin, the six-event scores being 5879 for Braun and 5797 for Lewis. The Briton would have had to finish some six seconds clear of Braun in the 800m to snatch the title, which was not a realistic target. In fact Braun overtook her in the last few strides to win by 85 points with 6739. Nazarovien maintained third place throughout the second day
These are the official results of the Women's Heptathlon competition at the 1997 World Championships in Athens, Greece.

Shot Put
Sabine Braun (Germany) is leading the Heptathlon after the 3rd event, Shot put. Braun produced a personal best with throw of 15.08. She now has 3072 points and is leading by a big margin of 116 points before Remigia Nazaroviene (Lithuania), who has 2956 points. Nazaroviene was best of the field in this event with 15.41. Only 6 points behind the Lithuanian lies Natalya Sazanovich (Belarus) who also had a fine result in shot, 15.03. She now has 2950 points for the 3rd spot. All of first three are going for their seasonal best total points. With this pace, Braun is going to exceed total of 6800 points. Nazaroviene is quite surprisingly in the pace of her pb 6604, made in 1989. Belarussian Sazanovich has clearly bettered the performance of all the first three events of her personal best series, 6563, captured in Atlanta last year to take the Olympic silver medal. Coming from the back, now in 5th place, is Denise Lewis (Great Britain) with 2920 points. She is now only 30 points away from a medal and has a huge second day with a very good long jump and even more better javelin with her pb in that event mark of 56.50. Lewis made a personal best in shot with a throw of 14.55.

200 Metres
Sabine Braun (Germany) is still leading the Heptathlon after the 4th event, the 200 m. However, she was not up to her best form in the 200 m (24.46 vs her pb of 23.60) and her competition is now coming closer. Braun leads with 4009 points after the first day. Natalya Sazanovich (Belarus) was fastest in the 200 m with a 23.92 and has now moved to 2nd place with a score of 3938. Remigia Nazaroviene (Lithuania) also ran well (24.19), but still dropped to 3rd place. She is still approaching her personal best with 3919 points after day 1. Denise Lewis (Great Britain) ran 24.13, only 0.03 off her personal best to get first day total of 3888 points for 4th place overall. Lewis will probably challenge Braun and Sazanovich on the second day with her strong efforts in the long jump and javelin throw.

Long Jump
Ursula Wlodarczyk of Poland led the heptathletes in the fifth event with a leap of 6.63. That mark, a pb (although she has done 6.67w), added 1049 points to her total. She stayed in 5th place overall, but she moved 75 points closer to 4th place, and is now only 39 points behind 4th, and 52 points behind 3rd. As expected, the most notable beneficiary of the long jump was Great Britain’s Denise Lewis, whose leap of 6.47 ranked her 3rd in the event. With personal bests of 6.67 and 6.77w, she still might have hoped for more of a boost. However, the 997 points she gained vaulted her from 4th to 2nd, just 105 points away from leader Sabine Braun. The German now leads overall, 4990 to 4885. The battle between the two may get closer, as Lewis has the better javelin pb (56.50 to 54.10), while Braun has the better 800 pb (2:09.41 to 2:16.70). Braun, the 1997 World Indoor pentathlon champion, leaped 6.42, well off her best of 6.76. Natalya Sasanovich slipped from 2nd to 4th overall with a leap of 6.24, a substantial drop from her pb of 6.86. Remigiya Nazaroviene maintained her slim hold on 3rd by jumping 6.34 (pb 6.58). The second best jumper of the morning, Russia’s Svetlana Moskalets, used her 6.50 performance to improve from 8th to 6th overall. Her lifetime best in the event remains 6.93. Winds during the event were faint and usually aiding, ranging from -1.0 to +0.9 meters per second.

Javelin Throw
Sabine Braun of Germany leads the heptathlon after 6 events. She has 5879 points and is leading Denise Lewis of Great Britain by 82 points. Lewis was second best in the javelin with 52.70, but Braun also had a good result, throwing 51.48 and has now secured her lead before the 800m. Lewis now has a total of 5797 points. Nathalie Teppe (France) made the best throw of the field with 52.82. Also, Kelly Blair (USA) threw well with a 49.94. The fight for the gold might not be very close as Braun and Lewis are at about the same level in the 800, and Braun has an imposing lead in the points standings. The battle for bronze may not be as close as it seems. Remigia Nazaroviene of Lithuania threw 43.46 in the javelin and holds the third position overall. She is leading Natalya Sazanovich (Belarus), in 4th place, by a mere 9 points and Ursula Wlodarczyk (Poland) with 38 points. However, Nazaroviene has lately been a better 800m runner than her contenders, and may prove difficult to catch.
