2001 World Championships in Athletics Edmonton, Canada

2001 8th IAAF World Championships - Edmonton - Women's 20km Race Walk

Host City: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Dates: August 3–12, 2001
Nations participating: 189
Athletes participating: 1677
    Main venue: Commonwealth Stadium
Overview by IAAF   EDMONTON STADIUM
Ivanova, disqualified after winning silver in 1997, climbed to the top of the walking tree in 2001 with a world best of 1:24:50 before winning in Edmonton. Winning by more than one minute was testimony to the high disqualification rate; a third of the starters were red-carded, though Ivanova herself never received a single warning despite leading all the way. Tsybulskaya was a clear second and in third place Perrone and Plätzer crossed the line together. Perrone was given the verdict over the Norwegian, who was disqualified anyway.
The official results of the Women's 20 km Walk at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, held on Thursday 9 August 2001.

Women's 20km walk final
Russia's Olimpiada IVANOVA set a new Championship record to win the women's 20km walk ahead of Valentina TSYBULSKAYA (BLR) and Elisabetta PERRONE (ITA). IVANOVA's time of 1:27:48 complements her world record. TSYBULSKAYA finished in 1:28:49 and PERRONE 1:28:56.
IVANOVA led out of the stadium and her early pace appeared too fast to maintain. So fast in fact that the Chinese hopes, LIU Hongyu and SUN Chunfang, and the Australian pair of Jane SAVILLE and Kerry SAXBY-JUNNA were disqualified as they tried to stay in touch. So too was Yelena NIKOLEYEVA (RUS) who was the only walker to challenge IVANOVA, at one stage closing the gap completely. Another early contender, Susana FEITOR (POR), was also disqualified 53 minutes into the race.
The leading group of PERRONE, IVANOVA, FEITOR and Kjersti PLATZER (NOR) went through five kilometres in 22:18, at which stage IVANOVA started to break away. After 10km, passed in 43:50, the decisive move had been made and the other contenders were too far behind to challenge the Russian, who entered the stadium more than 200m in front of TSYBULSKAYA.
In contrast, the race for third was a virtual sprint up the finishing straight between PERRONE and Natalya FEDOSKINA (RUS). The two athletes shouldered each other, with PERRONE surviving for a medal. FEDOSKINA was eventually disqualified, as was PLATZER.
In total, 14 women were disqualified.
