The men's High Jump competition saw some of the top jumpers of the season struggling with the lower heights.
World leading jumper Aleksander WALERIANCZYK (POL) had his first miss at 2.15m, while double world indoor champion Stefan HOLM (SWE), and Mikhayil TSVETKOV (RUS), had first attempt clearances until the bar reached 2.29m.
Mark BOSWELL (CAN), who only started the competition at 2.25m, then passed 2.29m moving straight to his season's best of 2.32m. Eight athletes cleared 2.29m, but some only narrowly and it looked clear that the next height, 2.32m, would be decisive. Walerianczyk, with a best of 2.36m this season, did not succeed at 2.29m and was only 10th in the competition overall.
One of the favourites, Germaine MASON (JAM), had trouble at the lower heights, but was able to go over 2.29m on his first attempt. Jacques FREITAG (RSA), the number two in this season's world list, had one miss at 2.25m, but was able to clear 2.32m at his first attempt. Boswell also had a good first jump before Holm was able to clear the height with his second, but dropped down to second place.
Boswell, a silver medallist at the 1999 World Championships, was the third and last athlete to go over 2.32m, with his last attempt. All others were left with a result of 2.29m. Tsvetkov, with no failures before 2.29m, was fourth with Mason in fifth place.
The three best were already decided before the bar reaced 2.35m. Freitag, already leading the competition, cleared on his second attempt to win the gold medal. Holm, having cleared 2.32m with his second, took the silver, leaving Boswell in third place.
