2003 World Championships in Athletics Paris, France

2003 9th IAAF World Championships - Paris - Women's Triple Jump

Host City: Saint-Denis, Paris, France Format: Qualifying round (14.15 or top 12 to final) (Aug 24)
Dates: 23 August – 31 August
Nations participating: 198
Athletes participating: 1679
    Main venue: Stade de France
Overview by IAAF    Paris Saint Denis stadium
The first two were the same as in Edmonton, but Mbango closed the gap on Lebedeva who had given birth since her 2001 gold. The Cameroon jumper, who did much of her training in Paris, opened with 14.77. This was quickly bettered by the 14.80 of Lebedeva who was the last to go in each round. In the second Mbango – with hair dyed in national colours of red, green and yellow – went ahead with a new African record of 15.05. Lebedeva responded with 14.97 in the second then 15.16 in the third, an effort which included a notable 6.11 jump phase. In round 4, the 27 year-old Russian displayed great accuracy on the take-off board (one centimetre to spare) and bounded out to 15.18 (5.51, 3.85 & 5.82). Martínez held third place throughout the contest. Lebedeva became the first Edmonton champion to win again in Paris.
These are the official results of the Women's Triple Jump event at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France. There were a total number of 29 participating athletes, with the final held on Tuesday 26 August 2003.

Women Triple Jump Final

It was an early tussle for gold in the women's triple jump, but Tatyana LEBEDEVA (RUS) won the battle, leaping a season best 15.18m to win her second consecutive World Championship title.

The Olympic silver medallist started slowly, improving with every attempt until fouling in the final two rounds.

It was a feeling of déja vu at the Stade de France as, like in Edmonton in 2001, the silver medal was won by Françoise MBANGO ETONE (CMR), who added yet another second placing to her collection.

Mbango took the lead early with an African record 15.05m and looked the only serious challenger to Lebedeva. However, the Russian answered the challenge with her next jump. Under pressure and needing 14cm to snatch victory, the colourful woman from Cameroon was red flagged on her final attempt, and had to be content with silver.

Claiming the bronze medal was Magdelin MARTINEZ (ITA), who recorded a national record of 14.90m. She destroyed the challenge that had been made by Anna Pyatykh (RUS), who was always on the ex-Cuban's tail, eventually finishing fourth (14.72m).

Further back in the field, Cuban Mabel GAY (14.52m) and another Italian Barbara LAH (14.30m) both recorded personal bests to finish fifth and sixth.

Women Triple Jump Qualifying

The women's triple jump qualifying round resembled a traffic jam today, as 14 jumpers leapt their way into Tuesday's final by exceeding the automatic qualifier.

Ex-Cuban, now representing Italy, Magdelin Martinez leapt a comfortable 14.73m first up, to get the psychological edge over pre-event favourite, reigning World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Tatyana Lebedeva (RUS), who also qualified with a jump of 14.62m.

With ten athletes already qualified, and with a previous leap just 3cm short of the qualifier of 14.15m, Olga Vasdeki (GRE) was under pressure on her third attempt. She came up with the goods though, cruising into the final with a season's best of 14.50m.

Cuban national champion Mabel Gay(14.43m) jumped a personal best, along with long legged Romanian Adelina GAVRILA (14.45m), both indicating they are prospective medallists.

In a near miss for the fourth best jumper this year, Olena Hovorova (UKR) lives to see another day. Sitting on two fouls, she judged her third and final attempt perfectly, recording 14.16m, safe by just 1cm.

With no real wind to speak of, Greece's Hrysopiyi Devetzi recorded a personal best of 14.34, and China's 23 year-old Qiuyan Huangleapt a season's best of 14.26m.
