Overview by IAAF | |||
Galkina, the world record holder, was the favourite, while Dorcus Inzikuru was unable to defend her title. Galkina led through the first kilometre (3:00.35) in the final, but then inexplicably began to slip back. Volkova took over the lead, and by 2000m (6:05.46) was almost 10m clear of Petrova and Jepkorir. She increased her lead by a couple of metres before the bell, and went away to win by nearly 20m from Petrova in the second fastest time ever. Jepkorir slipped back in the last lap, but easily held of Bisibori for the bronze. Volkova noted afterwards “Galkina is the best, there was something wrong with her today”, and then correctly predicted “she [Samitova] will be the first one under nine minutes.” | |||
