Overview by IAAF | |||
Jeter, Stewart and Campbell-Brown all cracked 11 seconds in the first two rounds, then Olympic Champion Fraser showed her form in the semi-final with a 10.79 into a headwind. Jeter ran a lifetime best of 10.83 to win the other semi. All four Jamaicans qualified for the final, where Fraser had markedly the best start and was almost a metre up after just 20m. That is where the race was won. By 60m (6.88) she was 0.08 ahead of Stewart, with Jeter third (7.01), and Campbell-Brown just ahead of Sturrup a half metre behind. Stewart then began to close, and was 0.05 behind at 80m (8.77 to 8.82). The taller Jamaican continued to close and a perfectly-timed twisting dip almost brought her victory as she veered into Fraser’s lane (3) on her immediate left. The winning time of 10.73 beat Merlene Ottey’s 13 year-old Jamaican record. Stewart too ran her fastest ever time. Jeter repeated her Osaka bronze. Sturrup, aged 37, clocked a world best time for seventh place – 11.05 – beating the 11.06 she ran in the corresponding race 10 years earlier! | |||
