Heidler and Wodarczyk led the qualifiers, and similarly led the final with 75.10 and 74.86 respectively after the first round. Wodarczyk then hurled the implement 77.96 for a new world record. So excited was the Pole, that in celebrating her throw she damaged her ankle so badly that she was unable to throw further, and would subsequently require surgery. Showing great competitive fire, Heidler improved in round two to 75.38, then 75.73, 76.44 (fifth round) and finally a national record 77.12. Klaas also set a personal best with 74.23, and occupied third place until Hrašnová’s fifth round 74.79. No competition had seen as many as 10 over 70m before – here 12 exceeded that limit in the qualifying, with 11 doing so in the final.
