Overview by IAAF | |||
Harting was receiving pain-killing injections because of an injured left knee, and wanted to end the competition quickly. The third throw of the final saw him reach 68.49, well beyond the range of any other thrower on the day. Hadadi reacted well, immediately throwing 65.29, but noone else surpassed 65m until Kanter finished off round two with 66.95. Hadadi cemented his hold on third with closing throws of 65.50 and 66.08 to hold off Harradine’s 64.77. But the day was Harting’s. In spite of his injury, he progressed to 68.97 in the fourth. After his last effort, the German repeated his shirt-ripping ritual from Berlin and performed his lap of honour topless. Alekna, sixth with 64.09, equalled Riedel’s discus record of eight world championship finals. | |||
