2011 World Championships in Athletics Daegu, South Korea

2011 13th IAAF World Championships - Daegu - Women's 20km Race Walk

Host City: Daegu, South Korea
Dates: 27 August – 4 September 2011
Nations participating: 204
Athletes participating: 1848
  Main venue: Daegu Stadium
Overview by IAAF
Aiming to be the first three-time winner in the event (or so we thought) Kaniskina stayed within the pack of 13 through halfway (46:16) before increasing the pace with a third 5Km of 21:47. At that point her lead over Kirdyapkina was five seconds. Liu, in third place just three seconds behind Kirdyapkina, got clear of the second Russian to clock 1:30:00, but finished 18 seconds behind the diminutive (1.60m/43kg) Kaniskina. In sixth place (eventually fifth) was Feitór, the only athlete to have competed in 11 World Championships, her best position being third in 2005. Kaniskina supposedly broke the “curse” of the Daegu daily programme. The cover stars for the first four days of the competition – Steve Hooker, Usain Bolt, Dayron Robles and Yelena Isinbaeva – all failed to win medals. From March 2016, for reasons set out in the report for 2009, Kaniskina could no longer be regarded as a medallist. Her compatriot Kirdyapkina was also later caught out by irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport. Silver to Rigaudo, bronze to Qieyang.
