Overview by IAAF | |||
The reigning champion and favourite Kiprop won the slow tactical first semi-final. The second heat, which was 10 seconds quicker at the bell, saw the elimination of five big names including world mile leader Souleiman and Olympic bronze medallist Iguider. Kiprop led the final for the first lap (59.79 by transponder), then Chepseba took over, reaching 800m in 1:59.35. At this point, he held a lead of 7-8 metres from Kiprop and a seemingly mesmerised field. Chepseba pushed the pace in the third lap, passing the bell in 2:42.76 with Kiprop and his followers now within touching distance. The lead was maintained by Chepseba until the finishing straight where Kiprop effortlessly flowed away with a transponder-timed 12.52 last 100m. He won by four metres from 2011 bronze medallist Centrowitz. Cronje crept up on the inside to pip Chepseba for the bronze. “It felt much more comfortable than two years ago,” said the winner. | |||
