Overview by IAAF
Kipruto posed a serious threat to defending champion Kemboi, having defeated him three times before Moscow in 2013. In the final, he led the field through 1000m in a moderate 2:45.94. Koech was slower yet in the second third of the race, reaching 2000m in 5:31.95. Kipruto went to the front with 600m to go, then just before the bell Koech moved slightly ahead. The two Kenyans collided at the start of the bend with Kipruto refusing to be overtaken. They were followed by Kemboi, Jager and the fastest heat winner Mekhissi. Kemboi found himself boxed on the backstraight but spurted clear with 200m to go, moving quickly from fourth to first in the space of 30m. Meanwhile, Kipruto was overtaken by Mekhissi after the last water jump, but recovered to gain slightly on Kemboi despite landing awkwardly after the last hurdle. Mekhissi repeated his Daegu bronze. The defending champion could afford to ease up before crossing the line, yet his final lap was timed by transponder in 60.20, half a second faster than anyone else. His victory celebration included stroking his mohawk haircut, showing off a message on his tee-shirt and performing a dance on his victory lap.
