Overview by IAAF
Carter held a slight lead on the first leg, then a good changeover gave the USA the lead. Rodgers produced another excellent pass to Salaam to give the USA a good metre’s lead at halfway over Jamaica and Britain. Salaam still had a slight lead approaching the final changeover, with Ashmeade closing, and Britain close behind. However, this time the USA’s pass was poor, with Gatlin taking an ungainly stride in Bolt’s lane. The Jamaican was past the American instantly and went away to win by more than three metres. Britain finished third and their quartet embarked on a lap of celebration, but were ultimately disqualified for a zone infraction on the full-stretch pass between AikinesAryeetey and Ellington. Canada, who suffered a similar fate temselves at London 2012, ended up with the bronzes. For Bolt it was an eighth gold medal, equalling the then World Championship record of Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix.
