Overview by IAAF
The seeded lanes in the final were filled by Masrahi, McQuay, and the previous two champions, James and Merritt. The latter started quickest DOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS MEN’S 400m 109 and the long-striding James had to work hard to stay in contact as Merritt flashed through 100m in 11.1. The American gained another metre by 300m (32.0) from James on 32.3, Borlée 32.4, with a threemetre gap to the rest of the field. Rather than engaging in a duel with Merritt as had been the case in Daegu two years earlier, the Grenadian uncharacteristically tied up. The American cruised away to win by nearly six metres in a personal best of 43.74. Behind him McQuay and Santos moved from equal sixth at 300m to take the minor medals, with Borlée just edged out. James ended up in seventh. He was as bemused as the crowd with his unaccustomed failure. “I died in the last 100,” he admitted. “I don’t know what happened.”
