Overview by IAAF | |||
Memories of 1987 were stirred when we had to wait for a photo-finish reading before we knew who would be champion. Tinsley (lane 3) was out fastest in the final, and led by a metre from Culson and Cisneros by the third hurdle, with Gordon and Bekri a further metre back. The American still led at the eighth hurdle, by a slim margin from Gordon. The two men ran virtually level down the finishing straight and crossed the line with simultaneously deep dips, both falling to the track. Gordon’s name appeared first on the scoreboard with a winning margin of 0.01. He said later that he felt he’d won because he only looked straight ahead approaching the finish. Tinsley had looked across momentarily. Behind the top two, Bekri surged past two men on the run-in to take the bronze. The Serbian had improved out of all recognition at these championships. Sánchez reached a record seventh final in style with a world over35 best of 48.10 in his semi-final. | |||
