  Main venue: Luzhniki Stadium
Overview by IAAF
The early pace was set by Rigaudo and Drahotová, as 5Km was passed in 23:17, with Olympic Champion Lashmanova seven seconds behind. The gap was the same at halfway, with the 18 year-old Czech walker timed in 45:20, a second ahead of Rigaudo, Lashmanova and Kirdyapkina. The Russian pair applied pressure over the next quarter of the race, covering that section in 21:27 and accumulating a five-second lead over Rigaudo at 15Km. In sixth place was the third Russian Sokolova, who then scythed through the field towards a bronze medal, but was disqualified on reaching the stadium. Meanwhile, Lashmanova had broken away from Kirdyapkina with a 19th kilometre in 3:58 (1:19:20 pace), but lost a lot of her advantage when becoming confused about the location of the finish when inside the stadium. “The judges didn’t really explain to us that we should do one more lap,” was her excuse. For Lashmanova it was the final gold medal in an annual sequence of five, the previous four being World Youth 2009, World Junior 2010, European Junior 2011 and Olympic Games 2012. In January 2014 she tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug and was banned for two years. Her Moscow medal wasn’t affected, but that wasn’t the case with Kirdyapkina. In March 2019, she was disqualified across 2011- 2013 for biological passport abnormalities. So China rightfully won both silver and bronze.
