Overview by IAAF
Hejnová was hot favourite to win, with eight unbeaten races in 2013, capped by a world leading 53.07 in London three weeks before Moscow. The final was a parade for the Czech woman after her nearest rival, Shakes-Drayton, tore a knee cartilage and posterior cruciate ligament in the opening stages. The valiant Briton carried on and held fourth place for much of the race before finishing seventh, then sixth once the doping disqualification of Titimets was confirmed. Meanwhile Hejnová won by 1.26 seconds from Muhammad, who passed her training partner and defending champion Demus on the runin. In an event which had been won by less than 0.20 in eight of the previous 14 championships, this was a staggering margin of victory. Spencer, a potential medallist, was disqualified for a trailing leg infringement after winning her heat in 54.10.
