Overview by IAAF | |||
The final began slowly with an opening lap led by Conley, whose transponder stopped the clock at 78.53 after 400m. Nowakowska led at 2000m in 6:14.09, and Ayana took over just before 3000m (9:18.44). Defar then had a brief spell in front on the ninth lap, as if to urge Ayana to go faster, which she then did on returning to the lead. That lap to 3600m (68.14 by photo-cell) was the fastest of the race so far. Ayana maintained that tempo with Defar, Cherono, Kibiwot and World Junior Champion Diriba the only ones to keep up. Then Diriba was dropped and Kibiwot fell back as the top three kicked just after the bell. Defar went past Ayana with 200m remaining, and won by almost 10m after a last 200m of 29.31 according to transponders. | |||
