Overview by IAAF | |||
Montaño, a perennial front runner, led through 200m in 26.91, six metres clear of Sum. The American reached the bell in a transpondertimed 56.12 (56.06 by photo-cell), a full seven metres ahead of Sum, with Savinova another six metres back. Montaño reached 600m in 1:26.49, still a second or so ahead of Sum, but with Savinova now only two metres behind. Sum and Savinova eventually passed the American halfway down the straight with the Russian seemingly poised for another big win. But then much to the crowd’s chagrin, Sum used her 1500m runner’s strength to pull clear for victory. Martinez came through on the inside to pip the valiant Montaño at the line. “I didn’t believe that Eunice could keep that speed to the finish”, reflected Savinova. “I congratulate her. It’s my loss.” The transponder timing showed that Martinez and Sum had the fastest last 100m times of 14.95 and 14.98 respectively. Savinova was stripped of her silver medal, as she was of her Daegu gold, for the reasons set out in the report of the 2011 women’s 800m. This meant that Montaño rightfully won back-to back bronzes. | |||
