Overview by IAAF
Defending and two-time champion Reese barely made it to the final having placed eighth in her group and 12th overall. The American only advanced on countback because she jumped 6.57 twice whereas Jimoh did so once. Reese clicked in the final with an accurate 7.01 in the second round. Only Okagbare was able to get close, and her fifth round jump would have won had she been as efficient as Reese on the board. She jumped 6.99, but it was measured at 7.13 from where she took off, as compared to 7.016 by Reese. The American’s win gave her an unprecedented sequence of six consecutive global titles indoors and out since 2009. Španovi was third on countback from Sudhareva, each with 6.82. The Belarusian actually had the longer single distance from takeoff, 6.914 to 6.843.
