Overview by IAAF
Despite Gatlin’s 19.57 in winning the US title, Bolt moved into the role of favourite after his 100m victory. Fastest in the heats was Guliyev, the former Azeri, with a Turkish record of 20.01. A time as fast as 20.39 was insufficient for advancement to the semi-finals. Gatlin and Bolt quickly drew clear of the field, and coming off the bend, Bolt was slightly ahead. Running hard over the next 75m, the Jamaican built up a lead of more than 2m, and eased down slightly to finish in 19.55 and take an outright record 10th gold medal from the IAAF World Championships. Gatlin finished in an excellent 19.74, while Jobodwana set a national record, just two thousandths ahead of Edward. The most watched incident of the entire Beijing World Championships came during Bolt’s lap of honour. A host cameraman riding a Segway accidentally swerved into the back of the Jamaican. Both men tumbled to the ground, and Bolt did a further head-overheels. It looked bad – but no harm was done. After the following day’s medal ceremony, Bolt sportingly agreed to meet the apologetic CCTV cameraman Song Tao. The two shook hands and everyone was smiles as the Jamaican cracked jokes about the mishap.
