Overview by IAAF
Quow gave Trinidad a small advantage over the US and Britain on the first leg, and Gordon slightly extended that on the second leg with a fine last 100m. Belgium, missing an injured Dylan Borlée, was more than 10m back in sixth place, but then Kevin Borlée ran 43.98 to bring his team back into contention. Trinidad still held an advantage at the final takeover, then as the leaders battled down the back straight, Jamaica’s Francis came flying past everyone. One felt that the 20 yearold might pay for his impatience, and so it was as Merritt and Cedenio went past the now suffering Jamaican in the finishing straight. Britain’s Rooney also edged Francis for the bronze (by 0.004), though having started so far back, the Jamaican did end up with the fastest split of the race (43.52). Merritt collected his sixth successive World Championship relay gold, starting with the the one he was awarded for running in the heats only 10 years earlier in Helsinki. Botswana found a time of 2:59.95 insufficient for the final. Even quicker in the heats was Olympic Champions Bahamas (2:59.24), but they were disqualified for a lane violation.
