Overview by IAAF
The heats were remarkable, with 16 of the 44 entries running lifetime bests. Eighteen men ran faster than 45 seconds and two of those (Masrahi and McDonald) set substantial national records of 43.93. The principal trio of Merritt, James and van Niekerk all qualified easily. Of those, James looked most comfortable in the semi-finals, from which Yousif became the fastest-ever eighth qualifier for a final with his 44.54. Merritt and van Niekerk were the quickest on the first curve of the final, passing 100m in 10.8, with the South African covering the next 100m in 9.9 to reach halfway in a searing 20.7. van Niekerk took control in the second half of the final bend, passing 300m in 31.4, with James (31.7) closing in on Merritt (31.6). The Springbok held his form throughout the final 100m and won by 1½m from Merritt, with James a further metre back. The winning time was the quickest ever by a nonAmerican and for the first time in one race, three men cracked 44 seconds. There weren’t too many initial celebrations for the winner as he was taken to hospital with severe exhaustion. Happily he recovered fully for the following day’s medal ceremony. “I just had normal lactic after the race,” he explained when he finally got to the mixed zone.
