Overview by IAAF
Röhler led early on with 86.68 to Abdelrahman’s 86.07, then the powerful Egyptian took possession of the lead with his seasonal best of 88.99 in round two. The compact (1.75m/90kg) Yego then boomed a massive 92.72, just missing Jan Železný’s 14 year-old championship record of 92.80. In the past such a throw might have deadened the competition, but here both Pitkämäki and Röhler produced two throws beyond 87m, while Finnish Champion Ruuskanen set a world best for fifth place of 87.12. Röhler had five throws beyond 86m, yet was unable to win a medal.
