Overview by IAAF | |||
The race started in Yongdingmen Park and finished in the National Stadium. A temperature of 22°C, with humidity of 73%, put paid to any notions of a fast time. At 5Km (16:06), one of the contestants from the parallel mass race was among the leaders. Pertile led at halfway in 66:55 – compared to the time of 62:34 in the 2008 Beijing Olympic race, which was staged in similar conditions though on a different course. At 27Km the unheralded Lesothan Ramonene burst clear and led by 19 seconds at 30Km (1:35:02). By 36Km, he had been caught by Ghebreslassie, and the 19 year-old Eritrean moved 12 seconds clear at 40Km. Ghebreslassie continued to pull away and eventually won by 30 seconds. The 41 year-old Pertile was fourth, having stopped for almost a minute at around 30Km to answer a call of nature. He might otherwise have challenged for the bronze. Favoured Kenyans Kimetto and Kipsang both failed to finish. | |||
