Overview by IAAF
Often the qualifying standard is set too high for 12 athletes to reach, but on this occasion 16 men cleared the 5.70 required to reach the final. Principal among these was Lavillenie, the IAAF athlete of the year in 2014. The Frenchman waited until 5.80 to take his first jump in the final, and cleared with ease, but then failed three times at 5.90. That left him in a tie for third with the Poles Lisek and 2011 winner Wojciechowski. Ahead of them were the gymnastic Holzdeppe – whose title defence was hindered by misses at 5.80 and 5.90 – and Barber. The Canadian jumped at every height, never failing until the bar reached 6.00, and impressing with his tidy clearances. Barber followed in the footsteps of his father George who had competed at the Helsinki World Championships.
