Overview by IAAF | |||
Taylor and Pichardo had both been beyond 18m twice during 2015, and Taylor was a slight favourite, having defeated the Cuban 2-1 in their meetings. Pichardo led the qualifying round with 17.43 to Taylor’s 17.28, and took early control in the final with his opening 17.52. Round three saw the Cuban improve to 17.60, with Taylor matching that distance. The American took the lead in round four with 17.68 (17.81 from take-off), and then produced a final round reminiscent of Mike Conley to reach 18.21 (18.32 from toe to heel). Pichardo reacted well with 17.73 (17.91), but overall was disappointed. “I cannot be happy for the silver today,” he concluded. Former winner Évora was close to his form of 2007-08 with a final round 17.52 to snatch the bronze medal from Craddock. The winning leap was the second-furthest of all-time and comprised thirds of 5.96, 5.84 & 6.41. The Cuban runner-up had much the longest phase of the meeting with a 6.68 hop on his 17.60. | |||
