Overview by IAAF
Felix went out startlingly fast in the final, and was a full six metres up on Ohuruogu after 100m. This appeared to cause the Briton to abandon her usual cautious race plan and react to Felix, one lane outside. The American neatly accelerated when she felt the Briton moving up at 250m, and entered the finishing straight with a four-metre advantage over Miller and Jackson. Ohuruogu was still in range to fight for a medal, but faded to last place. Felix may have lost half a metre to Miller in the last 100m, but she came home an easy winner in a lifetime best of 49.26, with Miller also clocking a personal best ahead of a Jamaican quartette. For Felix, this was a ninth gold medal from IAAF World Championships. That equalled the record set by Usain Bolt when he won the 2015 Beijing 100m, but in the very next race (the men’s 200m), Bolt increased his total to 10. In the first round, a standout performance was the apparent Kenyan record by Zakari of 50.71. Apparent because Zakari was pulled from the semi-finals the next day after it became known that she had failed an out-of-competition doping test in Beijing – on the day before the championships began.
