Overview by IAAF
The final was led by Japan’s Onishi and Suzuki for the first two kilometres, reached in 6:06.26 by photo-cell. Shortly after, Ayana executed her plan, upping the pace from 73 seconds a lap to 68. A photo-cell timed lap of 67.60 followed (to 2800m), and by 3000m (8:55.63) only Dibaba and Cherono were in contact. In the next lap the Kenyan slipped back, as Ayana increased the pace with a 65.85 circuit. It was a tenth lap of 64.52 which killed off Dibaba’s chances. By 4000m Ayana was suddenly five seconds clear having covered that kilometre in 2:43.62. A final 1000m of 2:47.58 gave Ayana a winning margin of almost 20 seconds. According to her bib transponder, she covered her last 3000m in an unprecedented 8:19.91. Dibaba, with three races over 1500m in her legs from earlier in the week, was caught unaware by Teferi in the finishing straight. The youngest athlete in the race edged her famous compatriot by 0.07 to give Ethiopia another medal sweep. Dibaba later complained about her left foot: “I have a heel spur which hurts a lot.”
