Overview by IAAF
Sum was a strong favourite, having been undefeated in 2015 before Beijing and winning at five Diamond League meetings. It was therefore a surprise that the defending champion only qualified for the final as a fastest loser. Contesting the third semi-final, Sum ran her first 100m in 12.94 (1:43.52 pace!), zipped by 400m in 57.31 but then was edged by Bishop and Arzamasova. All three were in the 1:57.5s and the same three got on the podium two days later. Then, Sum again led in the final with a first 200 in 27.13 by photo-cell. The pace slowed to 59.08 at the bell. Arzamasova went ahead at 550m and held on to win, though Sum, and latterly, Bishop closed to within a metre.
