Overview by IAAF
Historically, the javelin has been the throwing event with the most uncertainty, and this was the case in Beijing. Špotáková, the world record holder and double Olympic Champion (though never a world champion), threw 65.02 to qualify, but managed only 60.08 in the final to place ninth. Lu led the competition until midway through the third round with 64.72, ahead of Obergföll’s 64.61 and Li’s opener of 64.10. Molitor then edged temporarily into the lead with 64.74. The powerfully-built Viljoen briefly took over in round four with 65.79, and Lu responded well in the penultimate round with an Asian record 66.13. Could Molitor break Chinese hearts with the last throw of the contest? Yes, she threw a lifetime best of 67.69 to take gold. In all, the lead changed seven times during the competition. “I cannot really believe this,” said the new champion. “After my fifth throw, I thought: 'Maybe I can still improve a little bit.’ I dreamed about that and now I have this new PB and world lead!
Perfect!”
