Overview by IAAF
The standard was the highest ever at a major championship, with the inexperienced Hadis finding that a sub-27 minute clocking was good enough only for seventh place. The Ethiopian played a part too, maintaining a 63 second lap pace in the ninth kilometre when others might have preferred it to have eased off. For the top 11, the second half had been quicker than the first by as much as 40.06. That extreme differential came from Cheptegei, who led at 3000m (8:09.13 photo-cell). It was Karoki (aka Muchiri) who was in front at 5000m (13:33.74 transponder), with a pack of 14 still in touch. Contenders started to fall back when Cheptegei took over again before the stint of Hadis, who was replaced at the front by Farah with two laps left. At the bell, Farah led from the three Kenyans and Cheptegei. The defending champion stumbled twice on the penultimate bend, but still burnt off more opposition, leaving just Tanui, Karoki and Cheptegei in contention. Farah kicked from the front to retain his title, while the Ugandan finished strongly for silver with Tanui third again.
