Overview by IAAF | |||
Lawson led with his opening 8.37, then Samaai (8.25) and Menkov (8.27) also produced good jumps in round 1. Former champion Menkov, the only jumper using a “sail” technique then had five fouls. World leader Manyonga then lived up to his billing with a secondround jump of 8.48 to take the lead for good. Lawson fought back with leaps of 8.40, 8.31 and a final round 8.44. Samaai gave South Africa a second medal with his last-round 8.32. Both the gold and silver medallists took off 6cm before the board on their best attempts, which meant the “effective distances” of their best marks were 8.54 and 8.50 respectively | |||
