The race comprised four laps of 10Km, with the start and finish on Tower Bridge in central London. Things began slowly, with the first lap covered in 31:36. The second 10Km (30:39) was much quicker, and Kipketer led a group of 17. He, Tola and Kirui moved clear of the field at halfway (65:28) and led by 12 seconds at 25Km. Three became two at 30Km with Tola and Kirui dropping Kipketer. The next 5Km portion was the fastest of all (14:43) and Tola began to fall back. By 40Km, Kirui led by 52 seconds. Tola was being caught rapidly by Simbu, who moved from 1:10 behind the Ethiopian to within two seconds at the finish. Behind the medallists, Britain’s Hawkins was the quickest, lifting himself from tenth after 25Km to fourth at the finish. The winner concluded: “this was the best course and the best crowd I have ever seen at a marathon.”
