Overview by IAAF
Jamaica had a great start to the defence of their title when Gordon clocked 50.9 for her leg, but then disaster struck as McLaughlinWhilby pulled up on the second leg with a cramp. Meanwhile, Felix was embarking on another of her incredible efforts, a split of 48.7 to put her team 30m ahead. Still to come for the US were Wimbley, who’d clocked 49.2 in the heats, and Francis, who was the new individual World Champion. This time Wimbley registered 49.58 and Francis 50.28, each the fastest of their stages. Their final winning margin was a record 5.98. Britain won the battle for second from Poland. Felix’s IAAF World Championship medal haul now stood at a record 11 gold, three silver and two bronzes. To that can be added three more golds as a youth and indoors. A less obvious record was broken by 1.87 tall Wimbley. She became the tallest woman to win an IAAF gold on the track.
