Overview by IAAF | |||
At the 2016 Olympics, Miller-Uibo (now married to Estonian decathlete Maicel Uibo) led for the entire race and just held on to win in a dive across the line as Felix closed her down. It looked as if London 2017 was going to see the same two women at the top as they flashed through 200m in sub-23 times. Francis was 3m behind, and Naser a further 4m back in seventh place. As she did in Rio, Miller-Uibo ran the second curve powerfully and led at 300m (35.36) by nearly 3m. Could Felix claw her back? No, because it was Francis and Naser who were coping best in the cold (15°) and wet. Just as it looked as if the Bahamian might hold on, at 370m she stumbled and lost momentum. At the same moment, Francis caught the fading Felix and went on to an unexpected win. Naser also went past Felix as both overhauled Miller-Uibo. Had the Bahamian succumbed to injury or cramp? She confirmed otherwise. “I looked up at the screen and misplaced my foot and completely lost balance.” Her final 30m took 5.42 compared with 4.49 by Francis. Eid Naser set national records in all three rounds and Felix collected her 14th World Championship medal. | |||
