Overview by IAAF | |||
The longest throw of the competition came in the qualifying round, when Lu’s opening throw reached 67.59, a new Asian record. European Champion Khaladovich led after the first round in the final, with 63.04, and although she improved her lead in the second round to 64.05, she had already slid out of the medal positions by the end of that round. The best in that stanza was Špotáková, who produced the competition winner of 66.76. Olympic Champion Kolak (64.95), and 20 year-old Tusuz (64.52) also produced their competition bests in that round. Lu clicked again with 65.26 to take the bronze medal behind teammate Li who improved her 2012 best of 65.11 with 66.25 in the third. Špotáková became the most successful female javelin thrower in World Championship history, winning her second title – a decade after her first – and her fourth medal. That record has since been further improved with her upgrade to a third gold, in 2011, replacing the disgraced Mariya Abakumova. | |||
