Overview by IAAF 1936_olympic_stadium.jpg
After six world records in one afternoon in 1935, and an undefeated season in 1936, Jesse Owens was the athlete the Berlin crowd most wanted to see. In the 12th and final heat, Owens equalled the Olympic record, and then ran a barely windy 10.2 (2.3) in round 2. All the other qualifiers had runs of 10.5 prior to the final, with Metcalfe winning the second semi-final in 10.5 after Owens had run 10.4 in the first race. In the final Owens started fastest and flowed effortlessly to a 2m margin by halfway. Metcalfe closed to just over a metre by the finish, but no final had ever been so dominated against such quality opposition. Osendarp held off Wykoff, who repeated his fourth place from Amsterdam.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
In 1935 the two top sprinters (and long jumpers) in the world were Jesse Owens and Eulace Peacock. In addition, Ralph Metcalfe, who had won silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200 in Los Angeles, was still a top sprinter, giving the USA a formidable threesome. At the most important American meet in 1935, the AAU, Peacock had won, with Metcalfe second and Owens third. Unfortunately he was injured early in 1936 and although he tried to make the American team, was not the runner he had been in 1935. The 1936 Olympics were a showcase for Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals, the 100, 200, long jump, and on the 4x100 relay. Further, in front the Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, he shattered their myths of Aryan supremacy.
