Overview by IAAF 1972_olympic_stadium.jpg
Wottle won the US Trials in a world record-equalling 1:44.3, but then suffered a niggling knee injury, so that Yevgeniy Arzhanov was regarded as the likely winner. Fromm’s 1:46.9 in the first round was the only run quicker than 1:47 until the third semi-final, where Boit improved his best by more than a second to 1:45.9. He had been briefly disqualified for cutting in from his lane 3m before the 100m breaking point. In the final the Kenyans adopted team tactics with Ouko setting the pace, passing 200m in 24.7 before being joined by Boit at 400m. The paced slowed, and Arzhanov took over at 500m, earlier than his usual point of attack, passing 600m in 1:19.2. Wottle, in last place, was 0.5 seconds behind the leader. Arzhanov entered the finishing straight with 2m to spare over Boit and Ouko, and held them off, as Wottle began to close. The American finally caught the European champion as the latter made a desperate lunge for the line. With 26.4/27.1/26.2/26.2 the American’s 200m splits were remarkably uniform. So shocked was he by his win, that Wottle forgot to take his hat off at the playing of his national anthem during the victory ceremony.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
Dave Wottle had won the US Olympic Trials by equaling the world record with 1:44.3. But the 1971 European Champion, Yevgeny Arzhanov (URS), was favored especially as Wottle was nursing a minor knee injury. The final was led by the two Kenyans, Mike Boit and Robert Ouko, going to the bell in 52.3. They then slowed the pace and Arzhanov took over at 500 metres. He held off Boit and Ouko over much of the final lap, but Wottle began to close quickly in the last 50 metres and moved ahead of Arzhanov in the last few strides, the Ukrainians dive at the line narrowly failing to get the gold medal. Wottle ran while wearing his trademark golf cap, and wore it again on the victory podium. Decorum in the United States usually mandates that hats are removed for the national anthem, and Wottle had not done that. The only person who really seemed upset by this was Wottle who apologized profusely to the media.
