Overview by IAAF |
The favourites were Borzov – attempting to retain his title (the first to try this since Percy Williams) – Quarrie, Crawford and the three Americans. Only Glance and Crawford managed more than one run below 10.30 before the final, with Crawford and Quarrie trying to psyche each other out in their semi-final. In the final Glance and Crawford started fastest, then Glance was caught by Quarrie and Borzov before halfway. Quarrie edged away, but could not see Crawford (lane 1) who was half a metre clear at the 80m mark. Quarrie’s official time was 10.08, but a later re-read of the photo showed that the correct time was 10.07. Crawford, the biggest of all 100m winners at 1.90/87kg, never again ran quicker than 10.19. He won his country’s first ever gold medal and a jet airliner there was named after him. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
The two top sprinters since 1972 were Jamaican Don Quarrie and American Steve Williams. Quarrie had won the 100/200 double at the 1970 and 1974 Commonwealth Games, and would win the 100 again in 1978. He was considered better at the 200, but was a top century sprinter as well. Williams spent 1973-76 amassing a series of superb times, equaling the world records in both 100 yards and 100 metres. Many experts consider him, at his best, the fastest man of the 70s, but injuries and boycotts prevented him from ever making an Olympic team. Valery Borzov was back in 1976, but was not the dominant sprinter he had been in 1972. Another finalist from 1972 who was back was Trinidad’s Hasely Crawford, who first was noticed placing third behind Quarrie at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in the 100. In the Olympic final, Borzov and American Harvey Glance took the early lead, but Quarrie caught them by 20 metres. Crawford finished quickly to nip Quarrie at the line – by 1/100th of a second. Borzov added a bronze to his 1972 gold and Glance placed fourth. |

In the rounds, all the major players were running times in the 10.30's to 10.40's. In the semi-finals, some times dropped to the 10.20's but nobody knew who was fully extending themselves. They took the top 4 from each semi, so Steve Riddick was left out of the final even though he had run faster than Guy Abrahams in the earlier semi. With the #1 time from the semis, Hasely Crawford was still placed in lane 1, somewhat hidden from the other top contenders in the center of the track including American champion Harvey Glance, presumed 200 metre specialist Don Quarrie and the defending champion Valeriy Borzov. From the gun, Borzov was out fast in lane 3 gaining a half a metre on Quarrie next to him in 4, with Glance another half metre behind Quarrie. As Quarrie slowly gained on Borzov, Crawford was also speeding down lane 1. Quarrie went past Borzov, but Crawford was already ahead for a narrow victory, the leaning Borzov holding off Glance. Crawford became the first gold medalist and a national hero for Trinidad and Tobago. |
