Overview by IAAF |
Bayi had finished ninth in his heat eight years earlier, and then won fame as a world record breaker in the 1500m and Mile. He reverted to the steeplechase in 1980, and beat Malinowski, the Olympic favourite, in Stockholm a month before Moscow. Bayi was the fastest in the heats (8:21.38) and semi-finals (8:16.11), while Malinowski won the other semi in 8:21.15. Bayi, famed for his front-running, was the leader in the final at 1000m (2:38.8) with Malinowski 15m back (2:41.0). He was still was on world record schedule at 2000m (5:20.3), 25m ahead of Tura, and more than 30m clear of Malinowski (5:25.6). The Pole’s pace judgement was sound as he closed to within 5m of Bayi at the bell, and went away from the exhausted Tanzanian at the final water jump, to win by nearly 20m, with Tura closing to finish 8m behind Bayi. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
In 1978 Henry Rono (KEN) had a superb summer in which he broke world records for the steeplechase, 5K,10K, and 3,000 metres, and won the Commonwealth Games steeplechase gold medal. He would have been heavily favored but was injured in the Olympic year. The silver medalist from 1976, Poland’s Bronisław Malinowski, was back and had won the 1974 and 1978 European Championships and was likely the favorite. But he had been beaten in July by Tanzania’s Filbert Bayi who had moved up to this event from the 1,500/mile. Bayi, a noted front runner, took the lead from the start and was on world record pace thru two km. He had a 30-metre lead on Malinowski by then, but the Pole slowly closed the gap, coming to five metres back at the bell. Malinowski took the lead over the water jump on the final lap and won quite easily, Bayi hanging on for the silver medal. This was the last time the steeplechase was not won by a Kenyan, thru at least 2004. |

Former Mile and 1500 world record holder Filbert Bayi and Eshetu Tura battled at the front throughout the race. Bayi finally broke Tura on the last lap and was going on to victory. Bronisław Malinowski had stayed out of the battle, marking the leaders from about fourth place. As was his usual tactic, Malinowski launched into a sprint that is similar to the tactics used decades later by Ezekiel Kemboi, sprinting past Bayi over the water jump. The battle worn Bayi had no answer, just managing to stay ahead of Tura and the rest of the field. Malinowski was killed in a car accident a little over a year later. |
