Olizarenko broke the world record in June with 1:54.85, and also had pre-Olympic runs of 50.96 for 400m and 3:56.8 for 1500m, making her a very strong favourite. Her teammates were faster in the early going, with Providokhina clocking 1:58.44 in the heats as compared with Olizarenko’s 1:59.23, and Mineyeva running 1:57.50 to win the first semi-final while the favourite ran 1:57.69 to take the other heat. In the final Olizarenko went straight to the front, zipping through 200m in 27.2 (1:48.8 pace) with last place no more than 0.5 seconds behind. The relatively short Olizarenko (1.65) was trailed by the tall (1.78) cadaverous Mineyeva until the final curve, when Olizarenko’s potent mix of speed and stamina, carried her clear of her teammate. She won by a full 10m, breaking her own world record by 1.42 seconds. All of the top six set personal bests, with Mineyeva becoming the second fastest of all-time. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
The American-led boycott had little effect on this race as all the top runners were from the USSR or East Germany. In fact the top five finishers in this event would come from those two nations, with the Soviet Union sweeping the medals. Nadezhda Olizarenko was favored, having placed second at the 1978 Europeans (as Mushta), and equalling the world record with 1:54.9 at a meet in Moskva in June 1980. The 1978 European Champion was also a Soviet, Tatyana Providokhina. At the Olympics, Olizarenko wasted no time, moving into the lead with a fast first lap of 27.2 and 56.2. The field was still close at that time, but she then added 28.5 for the third 200 and dropped everybody but Olga Syrovatskaya-Minyeyeva. Finishing strongly (last 200 in 28.8) gave her the gold medal and a world record of 1:53.43, with Syrovatskaya-Minyeyeva getting silver, and Providokhina the bronze. |
