Overview by IAAF   1996_olympic_stadium.jpg
Reigning Champion Christie, together with World Champion Bailey, US Champion and three-time Olympian Dennis Mitchell, NCAA champion Boldon and Fredericks (twice under 9.90 in the month prior to the Games) were all gold medal contenders. Davidson Ezinwa was the fastest heat winner with 10.03, and Boldon ran the fastest quarterfinal ever (9.95) which lasted until Fredericks ran 9.93. Fredericks won the first semi in 9.94, and Boldon won the second, also in 9.94, with Bailey and Mitchell the runners-up, both in 10.00. Christie and Boldon false-started in the final, before another false start was called – with Christie the ejected culprit. Finally, the depleted field got away at the fourth time of asking, with Fredericks quickest (0.143) and Bailey last (0.174). Mitchell was the early leader, but Boldon took over at 25m and held the lead until 15m from the finish. At that point Bailey, who had started an astounding mid-race surge measured at 42.85 kilometres per hour, swept by and won by half a metre from Fredericks who just got by Boldon in the last 5m.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
In 1993, the World Championships were changed to a biennial meet from its original quadrennial format. Thus there were two editions between the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, with 1992 Olympic gold medalist Linford Christie winning the 1993 World title and Canada’s Donovan Bailey prevailing in 1995 in Göteborg. Christie had also won the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in 1994, defending both titles, although Bailey had not run at the Commonwealth Games. Also back in Atlanta was the 1992 silver medalist from Namibia, Frank Fredericks. As always, the Americans were very deep in the sprints, but they had no single outstanding sprinter in 1996, and in fact, at the 1995 World Championships, no American won a medal. The final began with three false starts, two of them by Linford Christie, who was then disqualified. The start was slow because of the concern over false starts, and Donovan Bailey had the slowest reaction time of the finalists (0.174). But once away, he ran away from the field, winning in a world record time of 9.84, with Fredericks repeating his silver medal, and Trinidad’s Ato Boldon winning the bronze medal.

        Results

These are the official results of the men's 100 metres event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. There were a total number of 106 participating athletes (plus two non-starters), with two rounds (twelve heats in round 1, five heats at round 2), two semifinals and a final.

Canada's Donovan Bailey won the gold medal, breaking the world record that Leroy Burrell of the United States had set in 1994. Namibia's Frankie Fredericks won the silver medal for a second consecutive Olympics, while Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Ato Boldon won the bronze. For Fredericks and Boldon, this was the second event where they both medaled behind a world record setting run; Fredericks took silver and Boldon bronze in the 200 metre event where Michael Johnson ran 19.32 to complete his Olympic goal of winning gold in the 200m and 400m events.

This marked the first time since 1976 that no American runner medaled in the 100 metres, with 1992 bronze medalist Dennis Mitchell placing fourth behind Boldon.

Defending gold medalist Linford Christie of Great Britain advanced to the final but was disqualified after false starting twice. This was his last major race before his retirement from athletics the next year.
