Overview by IAAF    2000_olympic_stadium.jpg
A great race was in prospect after the semi-finals. Schumann, the European champion had taken the first race in 1:44.22 from Bucher, and his time was duplicated by world record holder Kipketer in the third race. Between them, Saïd-Guerni won the second heat in 1:44.19, with Kenya’s Japeth Kimutai – a medal prospect – the principal nonqualifier. The final turned into a dawdle at the 200m mark, with all the finalists – except Borzakovskiy – bunched at halfway. Longo kept the lead, pushing Bucher off the track in the process, until 120m to go, when Sepeng took over. Kipketer and Saïd-Guerni followed, with Schumann taking the lead on the inside with 50m to go. Kipketer had the fastest last 100m (12.4), but wasn’t strategically placed to take advantage of his speed, leaving Schumann as the slowest victor since Ovett in 1980.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer had won the 1995, 1997, and 1999 World Championships. He would have been favored in 1996 but the Kenyan émigré was not allowed to compete by the Kenyan Olympic Committee. In 1997 he had tied Sebastian Coe's world record on 7 July, and then broken it 13 August and again on 24 August – leaving it at 1:41.11. He was expected to be pushed by 1998 European Champion Nils Schumann (GER), 1996 Olympic silver medalist Hezekiel Sepeng (RSA), rising Russian Yury Borzakovsky, and Swiss André Bucher, who had the fastest time of the year with 1:43.12. Italy’s Andrea Longo led the field thru a slowish first lap (53.43). He continued to lead thru 650 metres, when he pushed Bucher off the track briefly, leading to his own disqualification. Sepeng took the lead as the field neared the end of the curve, but Schumann took over 50 metres from the line, winning gold. Kipketer closed the fastest of the medalists, but was poorly placed coming off the curve, and could only get the silver medal.

The Men's 800 metres event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics programme was held at Stadium Australia on Saturday 23 September, Monday 25 September, and Wednesday 27 September 2000.

The top two runners in each of the initial eight heats automatically qualified for the second round. The next eight fastest runners from across the heats also qualified. Those 25 runners competed in 3 heats in the semifinals, with the top two runners from each heat qualifying for the semifinals and the next two fastest runner from the semifinals also qualified.

Germany's Nils Schumann upset Denmark's world record holder and world champion Wilson Kipketer. The race was one of the closest in Olympic 800 meter history as the first three were separated by a mere 0.08 second and the first five by 0.32 second. It was suggested Kipketer made a tactical error by not forcing the pace.

The final was slow, with André Bucher leading the first lap in 53.43. Down the back stretch Andrea Longo moved shoulder to shoulder with Bucher and at the 600 meter mark, just under 1:20 Longo dropped his shoulder forcing Bucher into the infield. Longo charged into the lead around the final turn with world record holder in next to last place chasing the notable young kicker Yuriy Borzakovskiy. Kipketer had to go out to lane 4 to try to get around the wall of runners ahead of him with Djabir Saïd-Guerni in lane 5 trying to get around Kipketer. Longo faded with 30 meters to go, with Nils Schumann in perfect position to pick up the pieces, holding off the late rush on the outside to take the gold. For the interference, Longo was disqualified.
