Overview by IAAF    2000_olympic_stadium.jpg
After three heats which saw Sonia O’Sullivan run the fastest time (15:07.91), the final began at a sedate pace, with Szabo leading at the first kilometre in 3:03.84. Wami and Worku then took over, coursing through the next kilometre in 2:53.5 before slowing to 8:58.33 at 3000m. O’Sullivan, who had been 40m back at one point in the second kilometre latched back on to the leaders. The third Ethiopian, Kidane, was in the lead at 4000m (11:53.60) with Wami sharing the work. Szabo took over with 600m to go and O’Sullivan closed to second place with 300m to go. The two raced side by side until the last 20m when Szabo finally got clear to win by 1.5 metres. Szabo had run her last lap in 60.01 (O’Sullivan 60.0), and her last 200 in 28.6, one tenth quicker than the valiant O’Sullivan. In all, twelve broke the Olympic record.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
Gabriela Szabo (ROM) was the heavy favorite, having won the 1997 and 1999 World Championships, and most major invitationals in the past year. She only lost once at 5,000 since the 1996 Olympics, that coming in the 1998 European Championship when Sonia O'Sullivan (IRL) won that title, until two weeks before the Sydney Olympics. In early September she had been defeated by Leah Malot of Kenya, but she did not make the Kenyan Olympic team. In the final, the Ethiopians Gete Wami and Ayelech Worku set the early pace, with their third teammates, Werknesh Kidane, took the lead at 4K. But in the penultimate lap, Szabo made her move and took the lead, and O'Sullivan moved to her shoulder. For the last 600 metres, it was a battle between these two as Szabo kept holding off O'Sullivan, finally getting a bit of daylight less than 30 metres from the line.
